A Guide to Shower Filters For Hard Water

A Guide to Shower Filters For Hard Water

Water Filter

You may want shower filters for hard water, but you also want to remove hazardous chemicals that vaporize during a hot bath. In the enclosed area of the bathroom, we inhale these chemicals and scientists believe that increases our risk of cancer.

You also want to remove chlorine, if it's present. Chlorine also vaporizes and inhalation is irritating to the sinuses, as well as the entire respiratory system. The chemical vapors are known to trigger asthma attacks. That's one reason that indoor swimming pools are closed if chlorine levels climb too high.

The best shower filters for hard water combine ion exchange to balance mineral content and soften. This step also removes traces of metals like lead and copper that seep in from the pipes. Metallic traces dull the hair and exposure to lead is never safe.

Granulated carbon will remove chlorine and some of the other chemicals, but a process called adsorption is needed to remove as many chemicals as possible. Specifically, it removes chlorination byproducts. Those are the ones that cause cancer.

The prices of shower filters for hard water vary greatly. Believe me. You don't need the most expensive product on the market to get the best performance.

Some people recommend reverse osmosis. That's an expensive and largely unnecessary step, even for drinking water filtration. It also creates gallons of wastewater and there are no units specifically designed for your showerhead. You'd have to get one for the whole house.

Whole house filters are sometimes a good idea, but generally speaking, your showerheads and your kitchen faucets are most important. There's no particular reason to filter the waters for the toilet or even the laundry. You can always add water softeners to the laundry.

Some people recommend a brand called Wellness. There's no real reason to go to that expense, either. They make some scientific claims that they can't back up with hard evidence. There biggest claim to fame is that they are supposedly used in the number one health spa in the world, but I couldn't verify that, either.

The best shower filters for hard water have been evaluated and rated by Consumer Reports. The company provides certified product performance data before you buy. The cost of use is pennies a day and the replacement filter lasts a full six months.

In case you have a hard time remembering when it's time to change your filter, the company offers automatic shipment and discounts for signing up. There are many ways to save money. Buying direct from the factory is one easy way.

You want a product that is easy to install and unlikely to leak, simply to avoid frustration. If you're tall, you also want one that does not reduce the height of the showerhead.

The right shower filters for hard water will protect your health, as well as prevent that scaly build up on your bathroom fixtures. Just be sure to shop carefully, so that you don't end up disappointed.

Hard Water Shower Filters - Get the Right One to Soften Your Bath Water

Hard Water Shower Filters - Get the Right One to Soften Your Bath Water

Water Filter

Looking for a hard water shower filter? I've got good news and bad. Hard water shower filters are available and some are reasonably priced. That's the good news.

The bad news is that some hard water shower filters are very expensive for no good reason. Would you pay 9.00 for a hard water shower filter?

I might, if I could see a good reason for the price. This pricey system is supposed to "imbue" our waters with health giving qualities. Through the use of rare Japanese stones, they are supposed to provide antibacterial and antifungal action.

The company uses pseudoscientific jargon to promote the product and I'm sure that a lot of people fall for it. They also claim not to use ion exchange or softening chemical compounds. Instead, they say they use magnets.

It's all very illogical. But, the fact is that you cannot "imbue" a liquid with anything simply by running it over a bunch of rocks. You can trap chemicals if the rocks are actually activated carbon granules. You can reduce hardness by exchanging mineral ions.

But, the reason that we need hard water shower filters has to do with the length of time that the waters sat in the ground. During that time, they absorbed some minerals. But, it didn't happen overnight. The process certainly cannot be duplicated with a hard water shower filter, so there is literally no reason to pay this much for a product.

You always have to be a smart shopper, if you really want to get something effective. A couple of different companies claim to offer hard water shower filters. But, when you look at their product's certified performance, you see they only remove chlorine.

You want hard water shower filters that also remove chlorine, because the chemical dries the skin and hair. It smells bad. It changes the natural color of your hair. If your hair is color-treated, it can turn it orange, pink or green, depending on the chemical reaction.

But, removing chlorine will not affect the hardness. Then there is a hard water shower filter that only contains water softening chemicals. So, it doesn't remove chlorine and other chemical contaminants. Some of those chemicals cause cancer.

Researchers have proven that chemicals are absorbed through the skin and inhaled during a hot bath or while showering. The best hard water shower filters remove all of those cancer causing chemicals. They also remove copper.

Copper isn't particularly hazardous, but it's nice to have a hard water shower filter that removes it, because it can stain your tubs and fixtures. It can also change the color of your hair, particularly if it is treated.

With ion exchange, hard water shower filters balance mineral content, so you bathe in the softest waters available, without adding chemicals. This can be proven with real science, unlike the idea with the rocks.

The best hard water shower filter provides a sufficient flow rate and has been rated A by Consumer's Digest. The cost is less than . That should help you find a satisfactory product, at a reasonable price.

Shower Head Water Filters Limit Chlorine Exposure

Shower Head Water Filters Limit Chlorine Exposure

Water Filter

So, you're here reading about shower head water filters being able to get rid of chlorine. And you're wondering, "What's wrong with having a little chlorine in your shower water? A little chlorine never hurt anybody, right?" Well, a little chlorine won't. But a lot of chlorine will. And a lot of public tap water contains such high levels of chlorine that you can smell it. If you can smell it, you need shower head water filters immediately.

Chlorine is the reason why you have to take a shower right after swimming in a pool. Chlorine is great for killing off algae or mosquito eggs in pool water, but it's not meant to stay on your skin for too long. Have you ever left that water in your hair and on your skin for a couple of hours? You really regretted it, didn't you? Your hair became stiff as a board and your skin stunk and itched. And if you've never left swimming pool water in your hair and on your skin for a couple of hours, I don't recommend it.

Does Water Have Too Much Chlorine?

You could get your water tested through water kits sold the aquarium section of your local pet store. You could even send your tap water to a lab, but that's kind of expensive. But there are other ways to tell if your water has too much chlorine in it that doesn't require tiny test tubes.

Just take a shower and see (and smell) what happens.

Can you get a good lather with your soap and your shampoo? If you can't, that's a good sign that there's too much chlorine in your bathing water. This is a sign that you need a shower head water filter.

All of this chlorine isn't good for your hair or your skin. It can dry out both and make your skin itchy, red and even give you rashes. The hair can become brittle and loose its luster. You can also get a lot of dandruff. People who have skin and hair irritated by too much chlorine in their water often find great relief from the use of shower head water filters.

Evaporated Chlorine

Having a shower makes exposure to chlorine in your tap water a lot more intense than by just turning on your kitchen tap. About 50% of your daily exposure to chlorine is in taking a shower (if you don't use shower head water filters). This is why it's important to get shower head water filters if you know your water has too much chlorine in it.

Not only does your body pick up the chlorine through skin absorption, but you also breathe in the chlorinated steam. Guess what's in that steam? Chloroform, which is used as an anesthetic. Although a little chloroform is great if you are getting surgery, you really don't want to sniff it every time you take a shower.

When you use shower head water filters, not only are you greatly reducing your exposure to chlorine, but to chloroform gas, too.

Even If You Can't Smell It

Perhaps you think that just because you can't smell chlorine in your shower, you may not need shower head water filters. Well, chlorine is not that smelly of a chemical. It takes a lot of it in order to register in your nose.

The best way to get healthy and comfortable showers again is with the use of shower head water filters.
